A concise, three paragraph declaration of animals possessing sentience was announced and signed by over 300 scientists. Importantly, the word "animal" here includes both vertebrates (animals with spines) and invertebrates (animals without spines) including mammals, birds, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, mollusks, crustaceans, and insects.
